Psychological evaluations for ages 6 and up
Children today face unique demands and pressures. Assessments can help you better understand your child—how they think, their strengths, and what challenges them. Learn what supports and strategies might help your child grow academically, behaviorally, and socially to better navigate their world.
Who would benefit from a psychological evaluation?
For parents wondering whether their child’s attention, behavior, social-emotional, or learning difficulties are more significant than their peers’, an evaluation may clarify diagnoses such as ADHD, autism, or a learning disability, and be used to help determine which supports or services may be most beneficial, so you know where to best focus your time and energy in helping your child make gains and feel understood and supported.
What does testing involve?
Psychological testing involves direct assessment using standardized measures looking at areas that may include verbal and nonverbal reasoning, processing speed, memory, attention regulation, impulse control, social-communication skills, and academic achievement. In addition, Dr. Redmond will gather information from caregivers, the child, and their teachers.
First, you will meet with Dr. Redmond to discuss your perspective on what your child does well and where they seem to struggle, along with their developmental history. Depending on the questions you have and your child’s age, testing may be completed over one or more sessions, ranging from 1.5 to 3 hours each.
What happens after the testing is completed?
After the evaluation, you will meet with Dr. Redmond to discuss the results. A diagnosis may be given when appropriate, but the emphasis is to empower you with a better understanding of how your child thinks and learns. Afterward, you will receive a written document summarizing the findings that also includes recommendations tailored to your child’s specific strengths and challenges. Dr. Redmond will remain available for future questions or consultations with you and other professionals.
